A Message From The Founder

Over the last 30 years, I have had the opportunity to explore various art mediums and how they relate specifically to the enhancement of light. The best of all of these is glass. I found that the greatest changes occurred when the glass was enhanced by a combination of shape, chemistry, structure, and composition.

To bring these elements together in the best way, I created a new special hand sculpted, hand painted fused glass. Each piece begins as clear window glass, which is then painted individually, using many of the same metals and minerals, which produce the colors in natural earth formations. The glass is then heated to over 1400 degrees, thus " fusing" all of the components together. To add additional radiance to the tiles, a layer of pure silver is applied by hand in a separate proprietary process. These resulting colors, patterns, and textures have come to be known as Penumbra Glass™.

We will continue to introduce you to this unique experience in light and its applications in both commercial and residential environments. We hope you enjoy the journey.

In October 2004, Penumbra Glass was selected to receive the prestigious Detroit Home Honoree Award for its work in the glass field. The competition consisted of numerous well respected organizations throughout Michigan. The committee, in making their selection, was especially taken by the unique layering effects and resultant depth of color and image throughout the glass display. They were also impressed with the remarkably controlled effects within each tile, even though the process is so complex. Penumbra is excited about having the opportunity to share their award winning glass with you.
